Shelter City Utrecht invites you to a night of thought and discussion focused on the transgender and intersex community on December the 11th at the Bibliotheek Neude in Utrecht. Become immersed in the firsthand experiences of a human rights defender in Zimbabwe through current Shelter City Utrecht guest, Tsano, and gain understanding of the human rights situation for the transgender and intersex community there through film and discussion.
Tsano, the director of Trans Smart- an organization dedicated to the protection and support of the transgender and intersex community in Zimbabwe, will discuss the challenges she faces in her work to fight for human rights. Tsano’s work has been vital in the transgender and intersex community, offering healthcare, mental support, shelter, and education while working with local hospitals and chiefs to spread awareness. Tsano, who has become ‘amai’ or ‘mother’ to many in the community, is the face of hope and resilience as she pushes through adversity in the name of human rights.
The night will also include a screening of the film Lola Vers La Mer, which navigates the tumultuous relationship between father and daughter in the wake of a family death. The film explores themes of acceptance, loss, and identity through the lens of Lola- a transgender girl from Belgium. Lola and her father travel to the coast to scatter the ashes of Lola’s mother. But Lola used to be Lionel, and her father has not accepted that she’s not a boy…With the urn and their troubled past between them, they have to come to grips with their grief and their feelings for each other.
After the screening, Tsano will share her experiences and we will open the floor to discussion.
