Ontmoet Juan Carlos
Peace Brigades International (PBI) is verheugd om Juan Carlos te introduceren, onze nieuwe Shelter City gast uit Colombia, die bij ons zal zijn tijdens de zomer van 2024. Juan Carlos is een toegewijde mensenrechtenverdediger die zich inzet voor de bescherming van de natuur in zijn regio en voor de rechten van zijn gemeenschap, gevestigd in de Pacifische regio van Colombia. Hij vervult deze rol al drie jaar en dient momenteel als beschermer van de Atrato-rivier, waar hij opkomt voor de rechten van de natuur en een gemeenschap van 300 mensen, inclusief volwassenen en kinderen.
De regio waar Juan Carlos vandaan komt wordt zwaar getroffen door de aanwezigheid van illegale gewapende actoren en multinationale mijnbouwbedrijven. Zijn werk richt zich op het vergroten van het bewustzijn over mensenrechtenschendingen en milieudegradatie veroorzaakt door deze actoren. Ondanks de vele bedreigingen blijft Juan Carlos strijden voor rechtvaardigheid en het behoud van de levenswijze van zijn gemeenschap.
Tijdens zijn verblijf in Nederland wil Juan Carlos het bewustzijn vergroten over de voortdurende mensenrechtenschendingen en milieuproblemen in Colombia. Verder is hij op zoek naar steun of strategische samenwerkingspartners om zijn werk in Colombia voort te zetten. Bovendien hoopt hij van zijn verblijf te profiteren als een mogelijkheid om uit te rusten.

Kom dan naar een interactieve avond in ons Human Rights Cafe, waar Juan Carlos onze speciale gast zal zijn. Hij zal zijn verhaal delen over de uitdagingen en strijd die hij in zijn regio ervaart. Het evenement zal ook een Q&A-sessie bevatten, wat een platform biedt voor zinvolle dialoog en uitwisseling.

Meet Juan Carlos
Peace Brigades International (PBI) is pleased to introduce Juan Carlos, our new Shelter City guest from Colombia, who will be with us for the summer of 2024. Juan Carlos is a dedicated human rights defender committed to protecting the environment in his region and advocating for the rights of his community, based in the Pacific region of Colombia. He has embraced this role for the past three years and currently serves as the guardian of the Atrato River, where he advocates for the rights of nature, protecting a community of 300 people, including both adults and children.
Juan Carlos comes from a region heavily impacted by the presence of illegal armed actors and multinational mining companies. His work focuses on raising awareness of the human rights violations and environmental degradation caused by these actors. Despite facing numerous threats, Juan Carlos continues to fight for justice and the preservation of his community’s way of life.
During his stay in the Netherlands, Juan Carlos aims to raise awareness about the ongoing human rights violations and environmental issues in Colombia. Furthermore, he is looking for support or strategic cooperation partners to continue his work in Colombia. Additionally, he hopes to use his stay as an opportunity to get some much-needed rest.
