Would you like to become a field volunteer with the PBI Colombia team?

PBI is looking for a new field volunteer for our Colombia team! In Colombia, we work on our mission of ‘making space for peace’ by providing protection and support to human rights defenders and communities in conflict and repressive areas. We do this through physical accompaniment, international observation, and advocacy, ensuring the safety and freedom of defenders through our global networks. Our international volunteers send a powerful message: the world is watching and ready to take action. 

What are we looking for in volunteers? 

The following list of skills, experience, and qualities provides an overview of the criteria used to assess volunteer candidates. Some requirements are essential, while others are desirable: 

  • Work experience with an NGO in the areas of peace, human rights, or social justice. 
  • Fluent Spanish – spoken, written, and read. 
  • Willingness to work in the field for a minimum of 15 months. 
  • A minimum age of 25 is recommended. 
  • Ability to work under pressure: the capacity to function effectively in stressful situations. 
  • Discretion and diplomacy. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the history, politics, and culture of the country of work. 
  • Empathy and multicultural sensitivity: the ability to work with people from diverse cultures, demonstrated through previous intercultural experiences. 
  • Flexibility: the ability to adapt work methods, tactics, and perspectives. 
  • Teamwork: experience with consensus-based decision-making and the ability to work in a cooperative and flexible team environment. 
  • Non-violence: a clear understanding of and commitment to non-violence. Applying non-violence in one’s own community is essential to applying this principle globally. 
  • Practical skills: experience with computer use, accounting, writing, library science, group dynamics, rural community work, photography, cooking, music, and other skills may be useful within PBI teams. 
  • Available to participate in the training and selection process in the second quarter of 2026 (between April and June, dates to be determined).
