In samenwerking met Both Ends en Studievereniging CS Ubuntu organiseert Peace Brigades International (PBI) op 28 mei om 19:00 een Human Rights Café in de Kargadoor (Oudegracht 36) in Utrecht. Klik hier om je aan te melden.
Op donderdagavond 28 mei komen Hondurese mensenrechtenverdedigers Bertha Zuniga Cáceres en Camilo Bermúdez naar Utrecht om te spreken over de strijd voor mensenrechten in Honduras. Bertha is dochter van Berta Cáceres, een mensenrechtenactivist die in 2016 werd vermoord omdat zij de inheemse Lenca gemeenschap wilde beschermen tegen een schadelijk waterkrachtproject genaamd ‘Agua Zarca’. Andere sprekers zijn Anne de Jonghe van milieuorganisatie Both Ends, en Roxanna Altholz en Pedro Biscay, leden van de Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts die in 2025 door de Inter-American Court of Human Rights werd aangesteld om onafhankelijk onderzoek te doen naar de toedracht van de moord op Berta Cáceres.
Tijdens dit evenement zullen panelleden spreken over recente ontwikkelingen in de zaak rond de moord op Berta, zoals de publicatie van het onderzoeksrapport van de Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts en de lopende rechtszaak tegen de Nederlandse ontwikkelingsbank FMO. Deze bank financierde het ‘Agua Zarca’ waterkrachtproject, maar hun mensenrechten- en milieubeleid kon mensenrechtenschendingen én de moord op Berta Cáceres niet voorkomen.
Pannelleden gaan met elkaar in discusie over wat rechtvaardigheid inhoudt in een situatie als deze, welke gevaren mensenrechtenactivisten nog steeds lopen in Honduras én hoe de internationale gemeenschap zich kan inzetten om inheemse gemeenschappen te ondersteunen in hun strijd voor gerechtigheid. Naast het panelgesprek is er ook ruimte voor Q&A vanuit het publiek tijdens het evenement én de afsluitende borrel.

On Thursday evening the 28th of May, Honduran human rights defenders Bertha Zuniga Cáceres and Camilo Bermúdez will come to Utrecht to speak about the struggle for human rights in Honduras. Bertha is the daughter of Berta Cáceres, a human rights defender who was killed in 2016 for defending the rights of the indigenous Lenca community and related resistance against the ‘Agua Zarca’ hydropower project. Other speakers are Anne de Jonghe from environmental NGO Both Ends, and Roxanna Altholz and Pedro Biscay, members of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts that was appointed by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in 2025 to do an independent investigation into the circumstances around the killing of Berta Cáceres.
During this event, panel members will speak about recent developments in the case of the killing of Berta, such as publication of the report of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts and the ongoing court case against Dutch development bank FMO. This bank financed the ‘Agua Zarca’ hydropower project, but their human rights and environmental policies could not prevent human rights violations and the killing of Berta Cáceres.
Panel members will also discuss what justice comprises in a case like this, what dangers human rights defenders face in Honduras now, and how the international community can support indigenous communities in their struggle for justice. Apart from the panel discussion, there will also be room for a Q&A during the event and more informally during the drinks afterwards.
